South Bay:

Birthplace of A Global SURF Culture

LOGLINE

We know where surfing as a culture is now, how much it's grown, what it's become, and where it's been colonized and exported… but how did it start? This is the untold story of how the culture was born — one that would largely characterize what it means to be a Californian and, more broadly, for a time, what it meant to be a young American. It is a story about who influenced and shaped the world's most aspirational lifestyle culture and, most importantly, where it all started.

Walk a creative line between scripted and documentary—embellished non-fiction — creating the energy, layers, and full-blooded guts that the rise of surf culture deserves.

THE STORY

A day in the life of a South Bay local, well, a not so normal day.

Roy (a retired surf photographer) is in a state of introspection. He wakes and goes online to check the surf forecast. He’s bombarded with the commercialization of surfing. Shows like the “Ultimate Surfer” stream by. He’s annoyed and cynical, and an internal “What have we become?” mantra reverberates in his head. He wishes for yesteryears. He gets on his bicycle, grabs his camera, and makes his way to the beach.

A typical day in the South Bay, or so we think. Roy and Eli (a young local), their worlds collide. The old and the new. Polar opposites, determined to go their own way. But the universe has a different plan. A unique chain of events throws them off course, forging them to work together on a whirlwind adventure across the South Bay. Their journey tests the generational shift of South Bay surf culture, igniting stories of the past, throwing us into an embellished world of reenactments — walking the line between fiction and myth. Folklore and urban legends that have grown in size and stature over the decades get tested as we experience the surfing spirit of the South Bay.

At its heart, it is a story of brotherhood, of two broken characters who are hurt and lost. Through their journey and their growing bond, they learn acceptance of each other, humility, and respect.

THE LEGENDS

This is the untold story of the legendary pioneers from the South Bay that launched the massive global surf culture we know today. Roy and Eli’s narrative explores the great ones, including Velzy, Bing, the Meistrell Twins, Hap Jacobs, Dewey Weber, Rick, and Greg Noll. It takes the audience on a journey — an engaging and unique positioning that adds dimension and layers and taps into the creative energy of the time.
